Question: Does aluminum rust?

Aluminum does not rust the same way steel does, but it can oxidize and corrode. You may notice a dull, chalky, white, or spotty appearance over time. Light surface oxidation is often cosmetic, but deep pitting, corrosion around fasteners, or cracks should be inspected.

Question: How often should I wash my aluminum trailer?

Wash it as needed, but do not wait after it has been exposed to road salt, de-icing chemicals, fertilizer, mud, or other corrosive residue. A quick rinse after a messy haul can prevent buildup and make a deeper cleaning much easier later.

Question: Can I pressure wash an aluminum trailer?

Yes, but use reasonable pressure and keep the nozzle moving. Avoid spraying directly into wheel bearings, electrical connections, seals, decals, caulked seams, and other sensitive areas.

Question: What cleaner should I use on an aluminum trailer?

For routine cleaning, use mild automotive soap or another aluminum-safe cleaner with water. Use a soft brush or sponge rather than abrasive pads that can scratch the surface.

Question: Can I use an acid wash or aluminum brightener at home?

We do not recommend using acid-based brighteners or heavy-duty truck-wash chemicals yourself. Some can be extremely hazardous and may damage the trailer or surrounding materials when used incorrectly. For severe oxidation, work with a qualified professional who understands aluminum restoration.

Question: Is white oxidation on aluminum normal?

Some dull or chalky oxidation can happen over time, especially when a trailer is exposed to weather, salt, and road grime. Clean the area first. If you see deep pitting, corrosion around fasteners, cracking, or structural damage, have the trailer inspected.

Question: Can I wax an aluminum trailer?

Yes, a wax or sealant can help protect visible aluminum surfaces and make cleanup easier. Do not use slick products on ramps, tread plate, steps, or other walking surfaces where traction is important.

Question: What should I inspect while cleaning my trailer?

Check tires, lights, wiring, the coupler, safety chains, ramps, hinges, fasteners, frame members, brakes, bearings, and any hydraulic components. Always follow the trailer manufacturer’s service instructions for torque specifications, lubrication, and maintenance intervals.

Question: What is the best way to store an aluminum trailer?

Store it clean and dry on firm, well-drained ground. Keep it away from standing water, road salt, fertilizer, and chemical storage. A breathable cover can help, but avoid trapping moisture against the trailer.

Question: Does this maintenance advice replace my trailer owner’s manual?

No. Your trailer owner’s manual controls when it comes to tire pressure, lug-nut torque, brake and bearing service, lubrication points, hydraulic systems, and other manufacturer-specific requirements.
